Las Vegas film events from Sept. 9 to 15, 2011

Alternative screenings of popular and classic films are available around Las Vegas for the week of Sept. 9 to 15, 2011.

These events are hosted by The District at Green Valley Ranch, public libraries, and The Sci Fi Center. Before confirming attendance, it is best to check the events’ respective websites or directly get in touch with designated contact persons by phone or email for possible schedule changes.

Friday, Sept. 9, 2011

The District at Green Valley Ranch offers a free screening of the family-friendly movie “Nanny McPhee Returns” at 7:00 p.m. The film runs 109 minutes long. The District is located at 2240 Village Walk Dr. Henderson, NV 89052.

Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011

The Clark County Library features “Your Highness” for its free “Saturday Movie Matinee” program from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. This 103-minute, R-rated flick screens at the library’s Jewel Box Theater. For a $5 admission fee, viewers can attend the screening of The Sci Fi Center, which showcases four classic films featuring the works of Ray Harryhausen. These films include “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad,” “Jason and the Argonauts,” “Mighty Joe Young,” and “20 Million Miles to Earth.” Screening starts 12:00 p.m. and ends 7:00 p.m. The Sci Fi Center is located at 900 E. In celebration of the National Hispanic Heritage Month (NHHM), the Sunrise Library offers a free screening of the animated film “Rio” for its “Sunday Movie Matinee” series under the special program Diversity NHHM. Open for kids, teens, adults, and seniors, this comedy-adventure piece screens at the library’s auditorium from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. Sunrise Library is located at 5400 Harris Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89110. The Windmill Library invites teens and Looney Tunes fans to watch the free event entitled “Looney Tunes – A Time Capsule of Pop Culture” at the library’s Meeting Room. This showcases many famous cartoon shorts featuring a variety of Looney Tunes characters. Screening starts 3:00 p.m. and ends 5:00 p.m. Windmill Library is located at 7060 W. Windmill Ln. The Paseo Verde Library showcases a pre-selected family movie for its “Picnic and a Movie” program. The Clark County Library features the 1940 motion picture “Mexican Spitfire” at the library’s Main Theater from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. This film is part of the library’s “Movie Series: Tuesday Afternoon at the Bijou: Lupe Velez, the Mexican Spitfire.” It is also part of the library’s celebration of the National Hispanic Heritage Month (NHHM) through its special program “Diversity NHHM.” Adults and seniors are welcome to attend the free screening. The Sci Fi Center invites sci-fi fans to a free movie night with “Yelp Get the Geek Out Event: Dead Snow.” The film “Dead Snow” is a zombie comedy screened at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
