Las Vegas film events from Aug. 5 to 11, 2011

Las Vegas hosts a number of film screenings and events from Aug. 5 to 11, 2011. Most of these are free summer movie events sponsored by local cinemas, malls, and public libraries.

This week also kicks off the start of the official “Star Trek” event “Star Trek Convention 2011: The Celebration of the 45th Anniversary.”

Friday, August 5

The Centennial Hills Park hosts the free event “City of Las Vegas Back-to-School Fair and Movie in the Park,” which begins at 6:30 p.m. Families and friends are invited to come and enjoy a number of offerings from community vendors, a jump house area for kids, and free school supplies for the first 500 school-age children who will arrive at the park. The Disney animated film “Tangled” will start screening at dusk and light refreshments sponsored by Smoothie King will be served for the moviegoers. Centennial Hills Park is located at 7101 N. The City of North Las Vegas presents a free program for families and friends called “Movie Madness,” a series of family-friendly films shown at a large mobile movie screen at the North Las Vegas Parks. For its Aug. 5 offering, Nature Discovery Park hosts pre-movie activities starting at 6:30 p.m., then the screening of “Tangled” begins at dusk. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase. Tuesday, August 9

Regal’s “Summer Movie Express 2011” offers a $1 ticket admission for “Gulliver’s Travels” at the Village Square Stadium 18. Screening starts at 10:00 a.m. Village Square Stadium 18 is located at 9400 W. Sahara Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89117. For inquiries, call (702) 221-2283.

Adults and seniors are invited to the screening of the 1964 “James Bond” movie “From Russia with Love” for the “Movie Series: Tuesday Afternoon at the Bijou: Shaken Not Stirred: Connery’s Bond” of the Clark County Library. Wednesday, August 10

Thursday, August 11

The official “Star Trek” convention aptly entitled “Star Trek Convention 2011: The Celebration of the 45th Anniversary” begins at the Rio Suites Hotel. This major “Star Trek” event features a number of meet and greets, contests, autograph signings, photo op with celebrities, and many other activities. Tickets are available at the “Star Trek” page of the Creation Entertainment website. Rio is located at 3700 W. Flamingo Rd. Las Vegas, Nevada 89103.

By sunset, Town Square Park transforms into an outdoor movie area with the park’s summer movie series featuring “Up,” the critically acclaimed animated movie from Pixar. Sundown serves as cue to the start of the screening. This event is free for all with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. Town Square is located at 6605 S.
