Las Vegas film events from Aug. 12 to 18, 2011

Las Vegas hosts a number of free and affordable film screenings and events from Aug. 12 to 18, 2011. These include summer movie events in libraries, malls, hotels, and other popular city attractions.

Many of these screenings are family-friendly offerings, but there are also a couple of movies meant for the adult audience.

Friday, Aug. 12, 2011

The West Charleston Library features the “Movie Matinee: Ramona and Beezus” program from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Families and friends are welcome to the free screening. West Charleston Library is located at 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89146. For inquiries, call (702) 507-3940.

The second day of the “Star Trek Convention 2011: The Celebration of the 45th Anniversary” continues at the Rio Suites Hotel. This official “Star Trek” event features a number of panel discussions, film showings, parties, celebrity sightings, contests, photo ops, and many other activities. The Clark County Library holds the “Movie Series: Saturday Movie Matinee” featuring the film “Paul,” a story of two sci-fi geeks who journey to America’s UFO heartland. The Springs Preserve hosts the movie program “Night at the Museum: Rango” from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Parents can drop off their kids for a safe movie night featuring the animated film “Rango” at $25 per head. 125 spots are available. The Sunrise Library features the animated film “Gnomeo and Juliet” for its “Movie Series: Sunday Movie Matinee” program from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Screening happens at the library’s auditorium and it is open to the public. The Clark County Library presents the 1964 James Bond movie “Goldfinger” for “Movie Series: Tuesday Afternoon at the Bijou: Shaken Not Stirred: Connery’s Bond” at the library’s Main Theater. The Rainbow Library hosts the “Summer Movie Matinee” program with the Pixar animated movie “Up” at the library’s Large Meeting Room. The Santa Fe Station Hotel and Casino hosts the film event “RiffTrax Live: Jack the Giant Killer” at 8:00 p.m. The stars from “Mystery Science Theater 3000” are geared up to mock the 1962 fantasy movie “Jack the Giant Killer.” Santa Fe Station Hotel and Casino is located at 4949 N. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011

The Town Square summer movie series features the free screening of the 1992 family movie “The Mighty Ducks” at the Town Square Park. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. While the screening begins at sundown, attendees are encouraged to arrive earlier for live events and entertainment for kids. Town Square is located at 6605 S. Las Vegas Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89119.
